A Brief History of MAZDA Motor Corporation

Mr. Jujiro Matsuda (1875-1952), substantive founder of Mazda, was born in Hiroshima in 1875. He was first a worker at a black smith, then a shipbuilding engineer at state-owned naval shipyards in Kure & Sasebo. He invented the Mazda Pump which he manufactured and marketed. He had a factory in Osaka. He returned to Hiroshima in 1921 to take over a restructured company.

• 1920 Toyo Cork Industry Company was established by restructuring a failed company.
• 1921 Mr. Matsuda returns to Hiroshima and overtakes the company as President.
• 1927 Company renamed to Toyo Kogyo (Oriental Industry).
• 1931 Production of three-wheeled vehicles begins under the name of MAZDA.
• 1932 Three-wheeled MAZDA exported to China (later also to India).
• 1935 Production of mining drills.
• 1940 Test production of small car.
• 1945 Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, but MAZDA factory escaped destruction.

After WW2, MAZDA expands to become a car & truck producer featuring rotary engines with active technical cooperation with European and American car makers.

• 1950 Small truck Model CA produced.
• 1951 Jujiro Matsuda retires, his son Tsuneji Matsuda takes over Presidency.
• 1960 Small passenger car R360 Coupe (middle photo) produced and sells well. Subsequently, a series of passenger cars (Luce, Familia) and trucks marketed with technical cooperation with German and British firms.
• 1967 Rotary engine commercialized (the first model: Cosmo Sport).MAZDA becomes a leading rotary engine car producer and expands models and markets
• 1979 Capital tie-up with Ford (terminated in 2015).
